ᐅ What to do about squeaky Malm dressers?

Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual problem that’s starting to get on my nerves: my Malm dressers keep squeaking whenever I open the drawers or move the dresser slightly. The sounds seem to come from friction somewhere between the drawers and the frame. Before I start taking any random measures or even disassembling the dresser, I would like to know: what are proven methods or tips to effectively eliminate these squeaking noises? I’ve been considering whether lubricants like wax or oil might help, or if certain parts need readjusting. My dressers are a few years old, so I don’t think screws or wood are broken—more likely something is tightening up or getting stuck.

It would be great if you could share any practical advice or solutions based on your experience or knowledge on how to properly get rid of these squeaks. Thanks in advance!

Hello Naugi7,

One thing that is often overlooked: Sometimes the noises are caused by slight deformation of the wooden structure due to moisture or temperature changes.

In such cases, the drawers may come into minimal contact with the cabinet body, which can cause squeaking. A thin felt strip or furniture glides applied at contact points can sometimes help to reduce friction.

If you have already narrowed down the problem, you can also check whether screws have loosened or if the drawer runners are properly positioned. Material-related stresses should not be underestimated.

I hope you find a good solution!

Hey everyone, it’s great to see you all discussing the Malm dressers here! 🙂

I had exactly the same problem, and silicone spray really worked wonders! But be careful: don’t spray too much, or it will get slippery and the drawers might fall out 😉

So first, clean carefully, then apply silicone sparingly – and those squeaky days will be over! Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Silicone spray is the best choice. Avoid using oil or grease, as they will just attract dirt in the long run. Clean the surface, apply the spray, and it will work well.

That is a very good point! Many people underestimate the impact of environmental factors on furniture wood. In my hobby workshop, I always maintain consistent humidity levels to minimize such issues.

Another tip for everyone here: if the dressers are older, it’s worth checking the glides under the drawers. These are often small plastic or felt pieces that can harden, break, or shift over time – which then leads to squeaking or sticking when opening.

These parts can usually be replaced inexpensively or substituted with suitable felt tape.

That’s exactly what I did, and it turned out great! A really minor intervention that makes a big difference. 🙂
