I have been wondering why some Brimnes bed frames from IKEA squeak even when properly assembled and apparently undamaged. These noises often occur with movement, such as when turning in bed or sitting on it. Since I really like the bed, I would like to understand what exactly causes these squeaking sounds. Is it due to the choice of materials, the construction, or perhaps assembly errors that are not immediately visible? Are there specific parts of the frame more prone to such noises, for example the connections between the slatted base and the frame or the screw joints? I look forward to your experiences and advice, as I may try to fix the problem myself before contacting IKEA customer service.
Hey Ledra64, really good question! I also had an annoying squeaking noise with my BRIMNES – definitely unpleasant when you get woken up by that sound at night. 😅
In my experience, it’s often just that the wooden slats at the joints are a bit dry or the screws aren’t tight enough. Sometimes it helps to tighten the screws again and treat the contact points with some wax or even candle wax. This greatly reduces friction, and the squeaking usually goes away.
So, a bit of maintenance and tightening worked wonders for me! 😉

To clarify the causes of squeaking in BRIMNES bed frames, the following points can be noted:
- The construction of these beds mainly consists of particleboard with a foil coating, which can rub against each other or metal parts when moved.
- Common problem areas are screw connections, which can loosen under stress and cause movement noises.
- Similarly, the support points of the slatted frame on the bed frame are prone to friction or pressure marks that create noise.
To fix the problem, I recommend:
- Checking and tightening all screws.
- Adding felt or rubber pads at contact points where materials rub against each other.
- Regular inspection, as screws often loosen again due to movement.
These measures have been proven effective in practice to significantly reduce or eliminate the squeaking issue.

Dirt can sometimes accumulate there, or the metal may be rubbing against the particleboard. A little WD-40 or oil can work wonders here! Just apply it sparingly, and the squeaking often goes away.
Don’t give up, you can do it! Sometimes the solution lies in such a small detail! 🔧🙂

Could it be that depending on the humidity level in the room, the chipboard swells or shrinks, which makes the squeaking worse? Would you then maybe need to readjust more often?
A good question about humidity – yes, wood-based materials like particleboard react to moisture. They can expand or contract slightly. This is especially noticeable with BRIMNES, which is made from coated particleboard rather than solid wood. As a result, joints may become slightly loose or pressure points can occur.
My advice: Try to keep the humidity in the bedroom as stable as possible, ideally between 40 and 60%. A good indoor climate helps minimize these issues.
Additionally, it is worthwhile to regularly check every few months to tighten screws if necessary or replace the padding.
