Good morning everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of selecting especially sturdy BILLY shelves for my storage rack. It would be great if you could help me identify which BILLY shelves or versions are specifically designed for heavy loads, or which additional reinforcements are recommended. I am especially interested in the maximum recommended load capacity per shelf board for the different models. The shelves will be used for very heavy books, workshop equipment, and similar items. I would also appreciate any experience regarding allowable loads for wood versus metal shelves or tips for safe installation. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Hello, the BILLY standard shelves hold about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf. For heavy loads, you should choose the version with metal shelves, which can support more. It is also important to secure the shelf unit to the wall for increased stability.

Load capacity of BILLY shelves: The standard shelves made of fiberboard are designed to hold approximately 30-35 kg (65-77 lbs) per shelf. The metal shelf versions, which IKEA offers as separate inserts, increase the load capacity to about 50 kg (110 lbs) per shelf. It is important not to exceed the maximum load locally, so the weight should be distributed as evenly as possible. Reinforcements, especially for tall shelving units, can be achieved through additional angle brackets or cross braces. Wall mounting is also strongly recommended for safety reasons, particularly if the shelves are very tall and heavily loaded.

It’s great that there are metal shelves available for BILLY bookcases! 🙂 This makes it much safer to store heavy loads. I have a BILLY bookcase with metal shelves and can only say: very sturdy! 🙂 Make sure to secure it to the wall, otherwise the bookcase can tip over when fully loaded. Good luck with setting it up!

I can only confirm that! Always choose metal shelves and screw the shelving unit to the wall. Especially if you plan to store heavy workshop tools, otherwise the shelves will sag in no time. 🙂 Have fun assembling it! If you like, you can share how satisfied you are with the load-bearing capacity.

Hey, I want to emphasize again: if you are storing heavy loads, you should carefully consider not only the metal shelves but also the width and height of the BILLY shelving units. Wider versions can be more stable if installed correctly. 🙂 The 80cm (31.5 inches) wide models offer better stability than the narrower 40cm (15.7 inches) ones. The combination of sturdy shelves + wide unit + wall mounting is unbeatable! Good luck with your project! 🙂
