Hello forum,
I am new here and glad to be able to exchange ideas with experienced practitioners.
I want to build a house using 50cm (20 inches) bricks instead of 36cm (14 inches) bricks, so that I won’t have to insulate the exterior walls with plastic insulation.
Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks in advance for your opinions.
Best regards,
Ulli

I have the same question... which type of stone would be recommended then? Thanks in advance for the helpful tips klblb!

The house is an alpine-style house, located on a mountain about 1000 meters (3300 feet) high, and in winter temperatures can drop to around -20°C (-4°F)... brrrrrrrr

I can well imagine that "klblb" does not want to go through endless back-and-forth. Instead, try using the search function here; you will find many posts—also from recent times—on the topic of bricks.

Well, 50cm (20 inches) blocks are still not very common in the forum. T7 blocks with perlite or mineral wool insulation are probably suitable in this case, with mineral wool generally being somewhat more cost-effective.

Why not choose a wooden construction?
In Austria, they are quite common at similar temperatures and even higher altitudes, and they allow for better insulation options.
For cost savings, it is also easier to carry out some of the work yourself.
As a comparison, simply look at the lambda values, and if needed, use a mineral-based material for additional stone insulation (also due to easier recycling possibilities).
