Hello everyone,
we are currently in the middle of planning our new home and are focusing on the topic of windows. Our favorite option is wood-aluminum windows. We have heard from acquaintances that it is sometimes possible to purchase these directly from the manufacturer at a somewhat lower price—sometimes even in Poland. Are there any tips or experiences regarding this?
Looking forward to your advice and opinions.

I don’t have experience with windows from Poland, but at the moment I can’t say anything good about Rehau windows. There are many inclusions between the panes and compressed seals. You can find poor-quality windows anywhere. For a new build, I would only get windows from a specialist. With timber-aluminum windows, you’re entering the premium price range right away. We chose composite windows with PVC-aluminum as the best value for the price.

What is the reason for choosing wood-aluminum windows?

There are basically only two reasons: either you have a lot of money, or you want to bring trouble with the windows into your home.

A wooden window always requires maintenance. Wood is a living material. It absorbs moisture and releases it again. It swells and shrinks. To make a wooden window more weather-resistant, it is clad with aluminum on the outside. However, moisture can still accumulate on the inside, potentially damaging the window. After about 10 years, if you are unlucky, it may need sanding and repainting.

Vinyl (uPVC) windows or aluminum windows are significantly more durable and require less maintenance.

If you want my experience as a former window manufacturer (aluminum) and dealer (all materials): I don’t know a single window manufacturer that is any good AND sells factory outlet directly to end customers – it’s always one OR the other.

Hello 11ant! Thank you very much for your expertise! We will review your older posts on this topic and reconsider the "wood-aluminum windows"! Initially, we felt good about wooden windows in terms of indoor air quality and health. But maybe the other materials are also safe. Best regards

Also check out my external window posts (searching for "How many chambers does a window need" including the quotation marks should lead you to this series), and always keep in mind: wood/aluminum is either more expensive than pure aluminum or unfortunately BSD.

The naive “organic” label feeling is a major reason for the (often wrong) decision in favor of wood/aluminum. Knowing your house design, I could give a more precise window recommendation; usually, I combine PVC with aluminum (for the front door and other exposed elements). Wood or wood/aluminum is practically only considered economically viable for privately insured owners and, compared to pure aluminum, is only different, not better.
