Hello,
we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.
We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.
What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.
Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).
The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).
The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.
I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

Always greener lawns (golf course grass) are neither low-maintenance nor environmentally beneficial.
This is evident from the effort required for robotic mowers (also controversial, especially concerning animal welfare and child safety) and irrigation (also debatable).
Special grass mixtures that tolerate drought well do exist – however, these are very different from golf course grass and are not mowed as short. On the other hand, they are quite good for children. Likewise, flower meadows are truly low-maintenance, but they are not necessarily suitable for play areas.

You can tell by the effort involved with robotic lawn mowers (also controversial regarding animal welfare and child safety) and irrigation (also debated). I get the feeling @Pwnage619 has set his mind on getting a robotic lawn mower as a toy and is now looking for someone to confirm that. Rick, being a fan of toys, is of course the perfect partner for that 😉
We have 400 m² (4,300 sq ft) of lawn area, with sod installed on the south side and seeded grass behind the house on the north side for cost reasons. Obviously, the sod looked great in the first year on the south side. Now, in the third year, I actually find the self-seeded lawn even nicer. It was cheaper and isn’t as uneven as the one in the south. The main work is actually preparing the ground, which you have to do regardless of the method. If you’ve already taken on that task, you might as well seed it yourself. We installed irrigation throughout the garden, but to be honest, we haven’t needed it for the lawn very often. A robotic mower is great if you want to avoid the work.

The price per square meter online is somewhere around €2.50. I just checked out of curiosity... at first, I also saw prices around €2.x everywhere. But when I enter the postal code and quantity, depending on the supplier, the price ends up somewhere between €6 and €9. So it seems either very region-specific or just bait offers.

@WilderSueden It might be that only a toy is being looked for. However, many think that a golf lawn is the ultimate and so low-maintenance. Then they end up in other parts of the internet and wonder why the green area is neither soft, green, nor lush. At first, I thought so too, but with every post my feeling tends to go the other way. But to each their own. Let’s just wait until the dog leaves a mess right in the middle of the nice lawn and then the robot mower runs over it in the evening 😉
