ᐅ Is a polycarbonate roof covering for a patio canopy noisy during rain?

Hello everyone,
We are currently planning a possible terrace roof and are wondering how loud a polycarbonate cover gets in comparison to glass during rain.
Our living room is directly adjacent to the terrace – the children's bedroom is just above it – and our bedroom is two floors above that.
Does anyone have a meaningful answer?

We have laminated safety glass (VSG). You don’t hear anything. My neighbors have polycarbonate... It will be replaced this year. Really loud! Okay… After today’s appointment, it won’t be polycarbonate anymore but laminated safety glass (VSG).
Another question: has anyone ever bought suitable sun sails online at a good price? The awning is supposed to cost €4750 - the sun sail €2300. The roofing is priced okay. Any tips?

DaGoodness7 Apr 2022 19:00Today we signed the contract for polycarbonate.
At €6,600 for polycarbonate without shading compared to €16,550 for laminated safety glass (VSG) plus a awning, the price was ultimately the deciding factor. Noise was not really a major concern for us, but we will see how it turns out in the end. Currently, we are more worried that the roof might block too much light. I’m curious to see— the structure should be completed in about 8 weeks.

goalkeeper7 Apr 2022 19:06We received an offer for a 3.50 x 6.00 m (11.5 x 19.7 ft) clear laminated safety glass panel including installation for €4,900, with a delivery time of 3-4 weeks. The aluminum used is 3.5 mm (0.14 inches) thick — there are already similar installations in the area, and they look great.
I also found underlay sun sails:
Peddy Shield — each element can be purchased for €52, and seven are needed.
This tip came from the seller — €350 compared to €2,300 from the patio roof builder — sounds like a competing offer.

DaGoodness7 Apr 2022 19:10I find pleated blinds quite nice visually as well. They are also not very expensive.

Tip: be sure to have the installation costs listed separately; you can deduct those as craft labor on your taxes. KD? That’s a great price! Didn’t you mention something like 50% initially? Two years ago, we paid €4100 all in for 3 x 5 m (9.8 x 16.4 ft) with laminated safety glass, and I had been following prices for almost a year. That was really good back then.

I also found understructure shade sails:
Peddy Shield – you can buy each element there for €52 – you need seven. I’m looking at those too for our place, but watch out: they only come in four fixed sizes, and the longest is 330 cm (130 in). For you, that’s already 350 cm (138 in) depth, but assuming an 8° pitch, you need a support length of 390 cm (154 in), resulting in an effective depth of about 370 cm (146 in) – so that’s quite a bit short! Also, they are only available in widths of 58 or 68 cm (23 or 27 inches). So be sure to confirm the effective width.
If that doesn’t fit, you’ll need a custom-made solution – that would cost nearly €1000 for seven panels.

KD? That’s a great price! You initially mentioned something about 50% off, right? Two years ago, we paid 4100 all inclusive for a 3x5 in laminated safety glass (VSG), after tracking prices for nearly a year—that was really good back then.
I’m also considering those for us, but beware: they only come factory-made in 4 sizes, and the longest is 330 cm (130 inches). Your depth is already 350 cm (138 inches), but assuming an 8° pitch, you need a beam length of 390 cm (154 inches), which means an effective depth of about 370 cm (146 inches)—so you’re missing quite a bit! Also, they’re only available in 58 or 68 cm (23 or 27 inches) width. So have the effective width confirmed.
If that doesn’t fit, you’ll need a custom size—which would cost around 1000 euros for 7 panels. No… it’s EMW canopies—also from Rüsselsheim. They get their sun sails from Peddy Shield. They have standard sizes available at 88 x 380 cm (35 x 150 inches) for 57 euros. I still need to confirm the effective width.
In February, KD was 6300 euros including laminated safety glass and installation—however, there was a 20% discount on the canopy at that time. The sun sail is an additional 1200 euros net.
