ᐅ Is a polycarbonate roof covering for a patio canopy noisy during rain?

Hello everyone,

We are currently planning a possible terrace roof and are wondering how loud a polycarbonate cover gets in comparison to glass during rain.

Our living room is directly adjacent to the terrace – the children's bedroom is just above it – and our bedroom is two floors above that.

Does anyone have a meaningful answer?

The additional cost is quite steep, does the laminated safety glass (VSG) option involve a different profile? Otherwise, nearly €10,000 (about $11,000) extra for laminated safety glass seems quite high to me. How large is the roof? Polycarbonate is generally superior when it comes to light transmission, but of course €10,000 (about $11,000) makes it a very different matter. But the question is, would you be able to convert later if polycarbonate turns out not to suit you in the long term?

This is probably because the extra cost includes the laminated safety glass (VSG) plus an additional shading system. For us, the surcharge from polycarbonate to laminated safety glass including shading (awning) is around €6,000 (about $6,600).

The panel size for polycarbonate is much larger than for laminated safety glass (LSG) – typically around 140 cm (55 inches) compared to 60 to 70 cm (24 to 28 inches). And a glass panel measuring 70 by 300 cm (28 by 118 inches) already weighs 40 kg (88 lbs), which installers have to handle overhead! On top of that, the structural design probably doesn’t allow for it. So no, if anything, conversion could only go the other way, from laminated safety glass to polycarbonate.

That’s actually what I would expect as well, although I didn’t specifically ask about it. I can check on that.

By the way, our roofing measures 10 m by 3.50 m (33 by 11.5 feet).

The surcharge for glass alone would have been about €2,600. The sun protection really makes the difference, adding up to a total extra cost of €10,000.

Ok! Then I misunderstood the + awning. I thought it would be an additional item!

Is it really possible to do without shading on polycarbonate? In that case, it would have to let through a lot less light in bad weather as well.

See here. Picture taken from Facebook. 16mm (5/8 inch) opal polycarbonate.

It actually does let in much less light – that’s why we decided against it.

Covered patio with metal supports and shaded area; construction site in the background.

But with Poly Opal

… the living room stays dark 24/7, except at night.

Another question: has anyone ever bought suitable sun sails online for a good price? The awning is supposed to cost €4750 - sun sails €2300. The roof fits the budget. Any tips?

What price range are you thinking of? It also depends on functionality and comfort. What do you want to save on, and what is absolutely necessary? For a width of 6 meters (20 feet), you pay more than for a standard width of 4 meters (13 feet).

I also found retractable sun sails:
Peddy Shield – you can buy each element for €52, and you need seven.

And would you have to manually open and close all seven?

We bought from Schweng, the complete package including lighting and awning. He was the cheapest… solid work with a satisfaction guarantee 🙂
… I just checked: unfortunately, he no longer has price offers on his website 🙁
