Hello everyone,
Slowly but surely, the exterior plaster is going on, so we urgently need to decide on an intercom system.
The general contractor is installing some kind of "standard unit" (I don’t remember the manufacturer – but he said it’s a very cheap one for 200€) which we actually don’t really want.
However, we don’t want to spend a fortune either and have set a budget of around 700€.
We have:
- Front door with fingerprint reader and motorized lock (fully wired electrically)
- All necessary connections in the entrance area prepared for this (2-wire system and LAN)
- Our tech setup in the basement with PoE switch, Speedport for fiber optics, 2 access points (one each on the ground floor and top floor) to provide sufficient Wi-Fi (if that matters at all for the choice of intercom system)
We want:
- No intercom upstairs (we consider it “unnecessary” nowadays – however, it would be important that the doorbell can be operated via app or external device, so we can open the door and speak even when upstairs on the move)
- Intercom on the ground floor (preferably a “tablet” with video – but not a must! Audio would also be sufficient, but it should look nice and not be a handset with cable or similar)
- Is a door chime necessary inside the house? Is it possible to install something so I can hear the doorbell upstairs and maybe also in the hallway area? Otherwise, I would only hear the chime on the tablet and possibly on the external devices, right? What would be the best way to do this?
- Appearance is very important – a nice, simple doorbell (if possible with name engraving) and a nice indoor unit (preferably tablet-style if possible)
--> I read a lot about the company Metzler here – this could also fit within the 700€ budget in my opinion (model VDM10). After some research, I think you can hardly go wrong with this. The question I have, though, is: Can I find it somewhere cheaper?
I would appreciate any personal experiences with your “intercom search” and how satisfied you are with your current system.
Also, I welcome tips/tricks, installation advice for the home network (with app control via Wi-Fi, etc.), and the best ways to manage it all.
Thanks in advance!

We are considering spending a bit less money since we don’t actually need a video camera.
Which option would be best in this case?
How does DECT work? Our router is located in the basement, but we have an access point on each floor – does this help for DECT telephony?
Would it be possible to buy a simple doorbell that can be controlled via a DECT phone and then just install a phone on each floor?
I’m concerned about the range from the basement to the upper floors. We have concrete ceilings throughout the house.
How could I generally ensure reception with a home phone on every floor (aside from the doorbell)? As mentioned, all the equipment is in the basement, but Wi-Fi is available on every floor through access points. This whole technology is already overwhelming me...

No, that only works with DECT repeaters. However, I haven’t had good experiences with those.
The easiest solution is to use VoIP phones or an app like Fritzphone. This then runs over your Wi-Fi.
We don’t have any telephones at home anymore. We only use mobile devices or computers now.

As mentioned, all the equipment is located in the basement, but Wi-Fi is available on every floor via access points. We have a similar setup at work. Customers enter by ringing the bell, and someone uses the DECT phone to open the door. You can also make internal calls within the building. Everything works perfectly.

We don’t even have a landline phone anymore. We only use mobile devices or the computer. Alright – then I would leave DECT out of the equation if the reception is poor.
But aren’t those VoIP phones the big devices usually used in offices? Is there anything suitable for private use?
How about using Fritzphone with a Speedport Smart 4? Does it work normally? Could I also control my doorbell system through it? What options would be available here?

Fritzphone runs on DECT. You could simply use the Fritzphone app.
Or there are also affordable VoIP phones from various manufacturers.
Setup isn’t that difficult. But DECT phones come in so many models, right? Why the FritzFon? Just because of the app?
What I ultimately want is:
--> all the technical equipment including the router in the basement
--> only one phone in the ground floor (GF), but the signal should also reach the attic (top floor)
--> forwarding the landline to a mobile phone etc. is not necessary, I don’t need that
I would like to:
--> if possible, control the doorbell system via the phone, so I don’t need a separate indoor station
--> additionally, have a “bell” in the attic so I can at least hear when someone rings. Maybe there is an app for the doorbell system that I can also control on my mobile phone.
--> doorbell on the ground floor as a phone
--> doorbell in the attic as a chime, and then for opening the door for example via the mobile phone that I’m carrying anyway
I hope you understand what I mean?
Overall:
- landline phone desired on the ground floor, but with signal coverage throughout the house
- affordable doorbell system (audio only, video not essential), ideally via the phone, so possibly cheaper and no separate indoor unit required?
- audible sound in the attic and possibly door opening via mobile app?
- all the technical equipment is in the basement
Honestly, this “final” step with the house is totally overwhelming me 😀
I’ve put so much thought into the technology, and in my opinion I did everything right with the complete installation in the basement (PoE switch, Speedport 4 with fiber optic, access points powered by PoE injection, etc.) 😀 now it’s just this “damn” doorbell system, and I have no clue what to do or where to put it—especially in combination with a landline phone (which my wife really wants…).
