Hello everyone,

Slowly but surely, the exterior plaster is going on, so we urgently need to decide on an intercom system.

The general contractor is installing some kind of "standard unit" (I don’t remember the manufacturer – but he said it’s a very cheap one for 200€) which we actually don’t really want.

However, we don’t want to spend a fortune either and have set a budget of around 700€.

We have:

- Front door with fingerprint reader and motorized lock (fully wired electrically)
- All necessary connections in the entrance area prepared for this (2-wire system and LAN)
- Our tech setup in the basement with PoE switch, Speedport for fiber optics, 2 access points (one each on the ground floor and top floor) to provide sufficient Wi-Fi (if that matters at all for the choice of intercom system)

We want:

- No intercom upstairs (we consider it “unnecessary” nowadays – however, it would be important that the doorbell can be operated via app or external device, so we can open the door and speak even when upstairs on the move)

- Intercom on the ground floor (preferably a “tablet” with video – but not a must! Audio would also be sufficient, but it should look nice and not be a handset with cable or similar)

- Is a door chime necessary inside the house? Is it possible to install something so I can hear the doorbell upstairs and maybe also in the hallway area? Otherwise, I would only hear the chime on the tablet and possibly on the external devices, right? What would be the best way to do this?

- Appearance is very important – a nice, simple doorbell (if possible with name engraving) and a nice indoor unit (preferably tablet-style if possible)

--> I read a lot about the company Metzler here – this could also fit within the 700€ budget in my opinion (model VDM10). After some research, I think you can hardly go wrong with this. The question I have, though, is: Can I find it somewhere cheaper?

I would appreciate any personal experiences with your “intercom search” and how satisfied you are with your current system.

Also, I welcome tips/tricks, installation advice for the home network (with app control via Wi-Fi, etc.), and the best ways to manage it all.

Thanks in advance!

That is not entirely correct. The current 7590 model has 2x analog ports. (One of them is directly TAE; an adapter from RJ11 to TAE is included for FON2 (analog))

Hello everyone,

We are building a prefabricated house this year and had the selection appointment last week. We only chose the preparation for an intercom system there (optionally with bus two-wire or patch cable).

We want a good video intercom with stations on the ground floor and first floor (doorbell preferably in anthracite, with an elegant design). The intercom should also allow the front door to be opened (an electric opener is installed in the front door). If it is possible to view the camera image on a smartphone while on the go, communicate with the visitor, and maybe even open the door, that would be a nice additional feature, but not absolutely necessary.

So far, I have the Metzler VDM10 in my shortlist. Would you recommend buying the version with two-wire cabling or rather with PoE? I am not entirely sure which is the better choice.

And could you please share your general experiences with the VDM10?

I would ALWAYS install two LAN cables for the video intercom system. Systems with PoE (Power over Ethernet) are, in my opinion, more flexible for network integration. This also gives you more options to choose and connect systems without mandatory cloud services and to access them externally (via port forwarding or VPN / WireGuard).

For example, I can remotely unlock the motorized door lock, and contrary to my initial assumption that this was just a gimmick, I have actually used it several times to let family members into my home while I was away (to pick up tools, bring food ;-), place packages inside, etc.). The video quality is excellent even at night and can be recorded if needed (ONVIF / Surveillance Station). The system is a Dahua (through Turm). It is now also available in anthracite and a more compact version with an integrated camera and RFID included (so it will be installed in the office once the landlord gets moving and the wall is up...).

PoE!

I’ve had the system for several months now and am generally satisfied.
I have to admit, though, that I’m not a power user in the sense that I use an electric door opener or other app features.
For me, it was an aesthetically pleasing and good value-for-money solution. Unfortunately, it’s used mostly just as a doorbell with a nameplate and video in our case. At least for now 🙂

If you want to know something specific, just ask...

How many indoor stations do you use (and which ones? Home or Pro)? Can you open the front door via the indoor stations? How is the app? (I think I read that it hasn’t been updated in two years.) Which app functions do you use?

2x Home indoor stations, although the second one is still not installed, only tested 🙂
So far, we manage with one, but have the second ready.

From what I remember, the Pro stations just offer a larger and higher-quality display. If I’m not mistaken, the functions are the same.
The Home stations also allow opening the front door, but I don’t use that feature.
Also, no app usage here. To my surprise, the VDM 10 couldn’t be integrated into the Metzler’s own app. You would have to use, for example, the Guarding Vision app.
