ᐅ Is it possible to have outward-opening windows with shutters?

Hello everyone,
I’m new here and trying my hand at my first post. We are planning to build our house next year. We are considering constructing a log house (with straight log beams). We would like windows that open outward, but also shutters. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there any proven solutions? Historically, this was common in Northern Europe. Thank you very much for your suggestions.

For windows with shutters, I find inward-opening windows more practical. This way, you can leave them open behind closed shutters.

I don’t see why that shouldn’t be possible. For a roller shutter, you simply install a box above the window. The appropriate guides are then screwed, glued, clipped, or otherwise attached to the window frames. All methods are feasible.

Ask a window company about this. Not a locksmith, carpenter, painter, or someone offering many unrelated services besides windows, but a professional window manufacturer. Many of them have their own showrooms where you can visit and inquire in person at any time.

If the “specialist companies” brush you off because they only want to do standard installations, then you’ll need to find one of the companies mentioned above. A carpenter made five custom roller shutters for my dormers because all the ready-made shutter boxes didn’t fit due to issues like window height for emergency escape, accessibility, avoiding unattractive external installation, and not being installed internally, among other reasons. It was a long story. He did a very good job.

@Tassimat ... this is about shutters, not roller blinds. If the windows open outward, the shutters can only be closed from the outside.

Calling it a niche topic is a big exaggeration. You are a complete rarity with that. Even in the Nordic countries, outward-opening windows are hardly used anymore (this is related to the fact that in the past windows opened outward to withstand wind and snow). Today, this is no longer necessary because technology has advanced.

I used to be a window manufacturer, with my own profile system, and not exactly for budget-conscious clients. But customers like those, I hardly ever take on [Yes indeed, taxi, 1982]. Basically, fulfilling such a request is almost purely a matter of will. However, there is a slight complication with burglary protection if the hardware is on the outside. Then you really have to modify much more than just drilling the handle on the other side. Only an Egyptian exporter ever inquired about something like this; nobody in Germany. A Scandinavian supplier actually withdrew from the German market last autumn.
