ᐅ Architect’s Design – Planning Crisis!

Good evening!

I’m hoping for some collective advice. We want to expand a two-family house – the options we considered at the time were either an extension or creating a usable attic by slightly raising the knee wall. I had major reservations about the first option because I’ve hardly ever seen an attractive extension. Then the architect sent me a design that I quite liked. However, it later turned out that structurally it only works with so many compromises that it’s unusable again. For several days now, I’ve been looking at this view and it only looks worse. It resembles a garage. But that’s not all – what was supposed to be a shaded area is unfortunately only 1.7m (5.6 ft) high. Yet that matches the balcony, as it was trimmed to the same width.

All parties involved, meaning us and the architect, generally get along well but are currently a bit stressed with each other. How does one handle a situation like this? By the way, we’re still puzzled about how the chaotic arrangement of windows on the garden side came about.

Wow, that’s quite a statement—definitely something no one here expected.
Letting go will be painful in the short term, but in the medium and long term, it will surely bring many great moments for both “parties,” including the enjoyment of exclusive visiting times 🙂
The house will benefit greatly from it as well!
I’m looking forward to the next draft 😀

Are you planning the renovation with the same architect?

No! The atmosphere was already very awkward, and in the end, we would have had to insist on a completely different fee for this new situation. Besides, for a renovation only, it’s more efficient for us to plan and draft it ourselves, then have an architect finalize the details and handle all the submissions. A friend is doing this now for a reasonable fee.

We’re working hard on it 🙂 The carpenter was already here yesterday, now the energy consultant still has to come through, and then hopefully we can submit a building permit / planning permission application and start the (internal) demolition work. The rush is mainly because we are treating ourselves to two weeks in Aruba at the end of the month. After the long, miserable corona winter, this was just necessary.

Renovations are underestimated. I don’t agree with the attitude that plans are mainly made just to satisfy bureaucratic requirements, neither here nor with new construction. In my apprenticeship, the master craftsman was especially called in for renovations.

Phew, that sounds like a complete change of direction. The youngest has been sent out the door, and the extension has been completely canceled. You’re practically starting again from scratch on a smaller scale.
Was there a particular reason for giving up the extension entirely? It doesn’t have to be such a huge addition like the one the architect planned.

If I’m understanding correctly, your living space will now be spread over three floors. I’m really curious to see what the new plans will look like.

By the way, now that the youngest is moving out, have you checked the ladder for any defects, explained to your husband how to use it properly, and scoped out the new neighbors because of your concern about living alone near the woods? 😀

But by then, discussing the floor plan is already too late 🙄
