Hello, I have an old farmhouse, and over time the concrete foundation has eroded (see photo). How do I repair something like this? Just brush off the dirt, apply a concrete primer, and then add new concrete on top? Will that hold?

Hello Merli,
by foundation you mean the lower plinth area that extends down to the lowest point of the footing. It’s great that the horizontal waterproofing layer is visible, which means rising damp is blocked below the brick plinth and cannot travel up the walls. Now you only need to focus on the vertical waterproofing. In principle, the entire wall has to be fully excavated for this (be careful with basement buildings and deep trenches, possibly consider shoring and the angle/distance of the excavation spoil from the trench).

Then, remove the old plaster / damaged concrete, clean the wall from soil and roots, and let it dry as long as possible. Next, apply a cement mortar plaster about 20mm (0.8 inches) thick or up to the required height of the wall (properly dampening the old wall should be sufficient), and smooth it out. Various waterproofing methods can then be applied to the dried plaster, ranging from bitumen coatings, cementitious waterproofing slurries, and silicate treatments to perimeter insulation with insulation boards. This depends on your needs and the building—whether it has a basement or not, and whether the space behind the wall is living space or just a regular cellar, etc. You can also consider installing a drainage system. An alternative to infiltration and drainage is sealing the ground around the house and directing rainwater away from the walls using the typical slope of the sealing surface (paving, slabs, or similar).

It will hold for now, but it no longer serves the function and purpose of a proper foundation.
