Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!
That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...
Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...
The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.
After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.
The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

I will.
I spend significantly (really significantly!) more time chopping next to the cooking pot and stirring or frying than at the sink – so that was the only logical choice. The island also had to be deep enough to prevent anything from falling off the back. 1.20 meters (4 feet) should be enough, I hope. It’s the same for us! I would definitely do it that way again, although if I had the option of a huge island, I would integrate everything there. But usually, that’s not possible…
In our kitchen, the cooktop is also located on the peninsula. However, it is relatively large and includes a second sink. I find this setup ideal. What doesn’t work are the tiny islands that only have enough space on the left and right to rest a cooking spoon. @saralina87 has countertop space next to the cooktop. I also always do my chopping next to the stove, which lets you keep an eye on the room.

I’m still surprised why in Germany everyone installs the cooktop in the kitchen island instead of the sink, like I’m used to from home. In addition to the other comments, in this case not all the (dirty) dishes end up on the island but rather on the countertop behind it.
The island is also occasionally used for a “buffet setup,” which isn’t ideal if there’s a sink (with all its accessories) in the way.
So the island area stays “cleaner” and is more inviting for social cooking or working together with friends or guests.

Isn’t the trend heading towards a second island anyway?
(scnr) You probably mean the play kitchen for children, that doesn’t count, or the outdoor grilling station on the terrace?
