Hello everyone,

I want to keep it simple and ask if anyone has already looked into the topic of turf in enough detail to recommend a good and affordable supplier or online shop! My landscaping contractor is going to shape the garden in the next few days. The landscaper suggests I should consider sowing the lawn in March. However, if I feel like it, I could also lay turf in early September, right?

Do you have irrigation or a robotic lawn mower? The choice of lawn also depends on that. If budget is not an issue, you can go with sod. For private use, there is basically no reason not to seed the lawn. It will be nicely green in about 3 weeks. You can also still sow in October.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any sod suppliers to you.

I generally agreed with that opinion, but after seeing how the lawn seeded by the landscaping company on the western neighbor’s property turned out, I’m undecided. The professionally prepared soil plus the seed only produced weeds instead of grass. In the first phase after construction, many gardens that didn’t use sod before are now installing it.

So, it’s not about saving time or having immediate green, but about starting with a lawn that is as weed-free as possible. The robotic mower and irrigation are already in the shed and waiting to be used.
I want to install it myself. My eastern neighbor did it himself and said it was easy and quick.

Therefore, I would appreciate any tips. At the moment, I’m looking at 1260€ for 250sqm (2690 sq ft) of sports and play grass with delivery.

The Pfeiffer brothers in Willich are known for high quality.
The experiences with sowing that you describe are usually made by people who have not paid attention to soil preparation.
As is often the case, price seems to be the only comparison criterion for this product. Not all lawns are the same.

Why not choose a shallow-rooted “robot lawn”? It is extremely durable and suppresses almost all types of “weeds.” Since you have irrigation and a robot (mower), it would be a good option.

Even sod (turf) remains weed-free only with proper maintenance.

Look for local suppliers. There shouldn’t be significant differences; otherwise, they would have gone out of business long ago.
An advantage is that you can usually cancel on short notice if the weather doesn’t cooperate, and if something isn’t quite right, you can request a replacement.

Two of our neighbors also tried sowing grass seed, and there was so much weed mixed in... after the heatwave, they are now laying sod.

For 500 m² (5,382 sq ft), four of us needed a whole Saturday and faced many challenging spots—curved paths, rounded edges of flower beds, etc.
