Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!
That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...
Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...
The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.
After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.
The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

Different builder, different kitchen, different tile. Unfortunately, the tiles look quite busy in this lighting; they are fairly matte and actually not that different in color.
The tiler and the hardwood flooring installer achieved a very clean transition, and we are very satisfied, even though the installer needed some convincing at first. Afterwards, he was also glad not to have a simple square design...
How we will like it in 14 years? No idea – but we definitely didn’t want something completely uniform! What I don't like at all is that the tiles simply transition to the wooden floor right in the middle of the kitchen and even under the kitchen island. Either the planning beforehand was poor or something else, but it would have looked nicer and more harmonious if the tiles had ended just after the kitchen island and the built-in wall. As it is, it just looks like a mistake. I do find the tiles stylish and a nice change, though.
The kitchen island was supposed to stand on the hardwood floor side facing the living room. Unfortunately, the drywall installers made a mistake on the other side of the passage. The transition had originally been planned a few centimeters (inches) differently but was deliberately chosen this way so that the dark front would be on the hardwood floor and the tiles from the living room would no longer be visible.
The photo is taken very close up. Overall, we don’t mind the transition at all, but we initially shared your concern!
