My house is 70 years old, with thick brick walls. One side—the west-facing side—is nicely decorated with motifs and faces directly onto the street: external insulation is only possible to a limited extent (a few centimeters). We share two walls with the neighbors, and the fourth side is free. There is a basement about 1.5m (5 feet) deep underground. Part of the house sits directly on the ground without a basement or insulation.
The whole building is damp: moisture is coming from the sides and from below into the basement and rising toward the ground floor. The windows are old. I want to insulate the exterior of this house. Which materials should I use? What should I do first to address the moisture?
Thank you!

To give a reasonable answer, your house would need to be inspected, the moisture content (where exactly the moisture is coming from) measured, and so on. Find an expert – with a focus on older buildings – near you and discuss your project with them. They will also be able to provide reliable estimates regarding the expected costs. Of course, this costs money, but it is money very well spent, as the expert’s assessment also includes liability.
Kind regards
