Who has installed or is planning to install a system like this? Does it make you feel more secure? Can your cameras do more than just show images?
This is what it looks like for us after a series of burglaries in the neighborhood a few years ago.
Outside, there are five bullet cameras and one dome camera installed at the entrance. Inside the house, there are three more dome cameras.
Everything is connected via PoE. Inside, there is an NVR with enough storage capacity for about 14 days of continuous recording. However, the cameras are (of course) event-triggered and only record when movement appears in specific areas of the image. (Therefore, the NVR has never actually been full.)
The cameras have different resolutions depending on their installation location, ranging from 3 to 10 MP.
The affected camera can also trigger actions during prolonged movement or tampering. For example, turning lights on or flashing them, sending images via the internet, activating a siren, and so on.
I wouldn’t claim that this makes us live more securely, but it does make us feel calmer. Because you know that as long as no images come from your home, everything is fine.

We were advised by the police advisory service to prioritize investing in mechanical security for windows and doors. Only after that should video surveillance and alarm systems be considered. Especially when perpetrators wear masks, video recordings are of limited use. A secure window or patio door that cannot be easily pried open or broken, however, is much more effective.
I see video surveillance as an addition to all the other measures such as mushroom locks, multi-point locking systems, laminated safety glass (VSG), and alarm systems.
Only when all these are in place should you consider video cameras. Cameras without passive protection are, in my opinion, pointless. Of course, the resolution and amount of light must be adequate. A white noise image doesn’t help much.

What are the general experiences of users? Do night shots make sense for identifying people?
The person needs to look directly into the camera from a distance of no more than 3-4 meters (10-13 feet), and the camera should have at least 3 megapixels.
Anything below that, in my opinion, is just for fun. You can recognize the person, but details like the face are difficult to identify. But that’s just my opinion.

Since we also have motion detectors inside, there should be some useful footage available. The cameras also serve to check on the house while on vacation. There could also be a false alarm.
Hello
Experience: About 2.5 years ago, two home invaders disguised with balaclavas were recorded by a camera installed behind the terrace in the garden at around 4:00 AM. It wasn’t me who saw them, but the camera. The police did not put much effort into the case. There were only two masked individuals.
However, I still recommend using cameras. The foolish burglars don’t bother to disguise themselves, and the “good guys” are not deterred by a break-in anyway. I have also experienced this. The police were not particularly diligent then, either.
