ᐅ Freestanding or Built-in Refrigerator?

Hello,

We are currently planning our kitchen and visiting various kitchen showrooms.
Every time we mention that we would like a refrigerator, freezer, and zero-degree zone all in one appliance, the salespeople grimace and say that there are only a very few models like that.

Over the weekend at MediaMarkt, we noticed that almost every freestanding fridge-freezer combination is equipped with a zero-degree compartment – this seems completely normal there.

This led us to wonder whether this is simply because these are built-in refrigerators, and freestanding ones might be somewhat more flexible? Of course, I am aware that I could research and buy any appliance myself to fit my preferences.
However, maybe there are real advantages or disadvantages to built-in combos?
I have already thought about this a bit, but I would be interested to hear your opinions and arguments on the topic!

A few details about our plans: We want an open farmhouse-style kitchen. The refrigerator will be located directly next to the tall cabinets (0 – 2.20m (7 ft 3 in)) and would either stand free at the end of the kitchen or be integrated into the tall cabinets. The kitchen starts to the right of the fridge, and to the left is soon the entrance door to the living room.

What are your thoughts?

Best regards,
Roppo

I will probably skip pyrolytic cleaning since our oven still looks good after 13 years, despite lots of cooking. I’d rather invest more in the cooktop. I’m torn between a Siemens model with slider control and a Neff with twistpad.

When it comes to the refrigerator, I’m undecided about the size. How many liters (cubic feet) of fridge and freezer space are really needed? We are two adults and a 2-year-old.

I find any kind of touch control on the cooktop to be suboptimal. For one, these controls often respond poorly or not at all when there are grease splatters or when hands are wet or greasy. Additionally, the cooktop does get uncomfortably warm during use, even with induction (due to residual heat from the pots). I also prefer the twist knob. And I’m in favor of pyrolytic cleaning in the oven. My time is worth significantly more than the small amount saved on electricity, and you can only properly clean behind the heating elements with oven cleaner, which I definitely don’t want inside my home.

I can't say anything about the stove; ours never gets that dirty.

Regarding the touch panel: Well, I use the cooktop occasionally, and I never have any issues with the touch controls. Nothing is hot to the touch, and it always responds. It's actually a very affordable unit, kind of basic like Ikea, I think it was around 299.

We also have the Neff Twistpad. As long as this item doesn’t get lost, it is by far the best cooktop control I know.

We have a touch control for the induction cooktop. During long cooking periods, it gets very hot. I was not aware of this and find it quite problematic.

So Karsten, you’re becoming a cook after all [emoji12],

Anyone else have tips on refrigerator size?
