Hello, we want to create a small decorative garden in the corner of our yard. I plan to remove the turf and then spread fine gravel, on top of which we will place larger stones. We have checked with building material suppliers as well as local basalt quarries. Everyone offers basalt gravel in 2/5 mm (0.08/0.2 inches) size in anthracite color. Is there a stone in this grain size that is even darker anthracite/black? Otherwise, for the base layer, is it enough to remove 5 cm (2 inches) of soil, lay down a weed control fabric, and then add the gravel? Should that thickness be sufficient? For 1 square meter, would that be around 80 kg (176 lbs)? Thanks for your help.

I can’t say much about the gravel, but it will be difficult to find anything darker than basalt if it is supposed to be natural stone. But 1 sqm (10.8 sq ft) = 80 kg (176 lbs)... it depends on the thickness... I don’t think that will be enough for you.

Think about the edging: you need a barrier to separate the lawn.

Hello, we have now asked a neighbor where he got his basalt stones. There is another quarry nearby that has darker basalt stones... The barrier is the next topic. Do you have any suggestions?

We are using these metal lawn edging strips, which are available by the meter (yard) and are easy to install and bend.

I find the metal edges somewhat impractical.

If you use a wider stone, it’s easy to mow right along the edge. With a metal edge, that’s not possible.
