We like two-panel windows (without a central mullion). They will probably be made of uPVC. Do such windows make sense at a width of 100 cm (40 inches)? Or are the panels then too narrow and impractical? The same question applies to the patio door: it will be 113 cm (45 inches) wide. Is it possible to have two panels here, or does everything become too narrow?

The frame was wiped down both inside and outside. However, when cleaning it ourselves, the frame will probably be treated more thoroughly. As for the glass, it’s hard to match the quality of a professional window cleaner. They must use some kind of products that remove dirt very quickly and still leave a streak-free finish.
In the future, we’ll likely use a combination of both methods: once a year we’ll give the frame a proper cleaning before the window cleaner arrives, and otherwise we’ll just let the window cleaner handle it. Since the window cleaner services several houses in the neighborhood in one visit, they only need to make one trip and can offer the service at a very reasonable price.

Argh – just saw this now; the crossbars divide the vertical sections ops:Yes, those were many small panes, and the worst part was that when wiping the muntins, the pollen/dust combined really well with the top layers of the silicone, smearing as little crumbs across the glass. No matter what you did, it was impossible to get streak-free windows. The silicone was probably too old and should have been replaced. But who does that in a house with an estimated 50 windows and therefore around 600 small panes inside and out?

Hello Sebastian, I suspected as much. If I widen the patio doors to 125 cm (49 inches), that leaves about 53 cm (21 inches) clear opening width per door panel (this is my rough calculation... I don’t have a door like this in front of me... maybe Uwe can give me an exact measurement on Sunday ). Is that still manageable? Best regards, Steffi We also have some floor-to-ceiling double doors about 1.20 m (47 inches) wide. We use those in some places to access the terrace and balcony. I can’t carry a breakfast tray through one open panel if it’s held crosswise, but turning it lengthwise works. If I need to carry a loaded drying rack, I just open the second panel. This doesn’t cause any issues in everyday use. We’re also not very broad-built.

Michael

Ah... now this is getting interesting..
Hello Michael, could you please share a photo with one sash opened?
How do you open the second sash? Is it complicated, like with a latch at the bottom of the window frame, or simply with a handle?
Best regards, Steffi I need to take the photo at home first. I will also measure the exact widths again. We have two different ones...
The second sash is opened by a lever in the frame, which is usually hidden by the first sash. However, I don’t find it complicated. I can even find the lever easily by feel in the dark. Whether I would have built it myself like this or preferred alternatives, I don’t know. It was installed that way in the house as purchased. In any case, it’s not bothersome.
I definitely wouldn’t want single-sash opening doors here. They would stick too far into the room when open.

Michael
