As you can hopefully see in the photo (hmm, why is it no longer possible to upload photos?), we had two compartments made in drywall construction in the (accidentally created) niche next to the chimney. We want to use them to store our firewood for regular use. The compartments are about 52cm (20.5 inches) wide and 39cm (15.5 inches) deep. We are concerned that putting in and taking out wood over time will damage the white-painted plaster.

We considered tiling the shelves, but in theory, you would have to tile the sides as well. That not only takes up space but might also look a bit odd.

Then we thought about installing a U-shaped steel sheet. It doesn't take up much space and is quite durable.

Do you have any other ideas on how we could solve this (discreetly)?

I can confirm those concerns. My cousin implemented something like that in his house, and after the first winter, the structure was completely damaged, obviously.

Take a look, there are these black steel insert boxes. With those, you won’t have any more trouble. |image not available|

White painted plaster is only suitable in such a spot if wood is stored there just for decoration 🙂 Apparently, that's a thing 😀 The idea of using steel sheet metal is good – I can’t think of any alternative that is both subtle in appearance and durable.

I left out such a niche of practicality.

Hello merlin83, where exactly did you find that? Can you name the manufacturer or supplier?
