Hello,

I have a huge problem and unfortunately don’t see a solution at the moment. I hope you can help me.

We bought an old farmhouse built in 1890. We attached battens to the old timber-framed walls and then covered them with OSB boards from the hardware store. Afterward, we consulted a local plasterer about how to treat the boards so that we could apply roll-on plaster directly. Following his advice, we applied a primer and allowed it to cure for a week.

Then we applied the plaster. After about 12 hours, many small yellow spots appeared.

We have tried applying the primer multiple times, but even after four coats, the spots remain visible in the plaster.

We then had a company representative come out, and they applied a sealant paint, which unfortunately did not help either.

After another visit from a representative, we received an insulating agent, with which we treated the stained wall again, but this product was also ineffective.

What can be done? I really don’t want to have to repaint everything five times. I suspect the resin from the boards is causing the spots since we installed a new beam that I treated in the same way, and through the plaster, two knots are visible.

Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hello,

You have quite an issue there.

I still have a few questions before I can form an opinion.

Which type of barrier primer was used? (Water-based, alkyd resin?)
What type of plaster was applied? Silicate, synthetic resin, or glue-based, lime plaster?
Were any insulation materials added later on?

If possible, please specify which products and qualities were used.

It is possible that, if the barrier materials are used incorrectly, the substances may still penetrate if the components are not compatible with each other or not intended for that specific application.

If possible, please take some photos.

Regards,
Igor

P.S.
Please excuse any spelling mistakes. I do not pay much attention to that.

Hello Meli,

Either screw gypsum fiber/gypsum boards onto the OSB boards or apply base coat plaster, mesh, and top coat plaster. Otherwise, it won’t work (stains, cracks, etc.).
