ᐅ Why does my Billy bookcase keep squeaking when I open the doors?

Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual question about my Billy bookshelf from IKEA: Why does it keep squeaking every time I open the doors? It’s not just a one-time squeak; the noise happens every single time I open the doors, and it’s quite unpleasant.

The bookshelf is in a rather dry room and is about 3 years old. I’ve already tried lubricating the hinges, but the effect didn’t last long. The doors are quite straight with no noticeable play, and there isn’t much weight on them. I’m surprised that the noise doesn’t only occur at wide opening angles, but every time with the same sound.

Does anyone have an explanation or tips on how I can fix this permanently? Thanks in advance for your help!

So, I have now taken a closer look at the issue.

Key actions:
- Removed doors and cleaned hinges
- Used silicone spray (not WD-40)
- Tightened screws
- Readjusted door

And behold, the squeaking has significantly decreased, not completely gone, but much more tolerable.

I will now check how humidity affects the shelf and may try wax as Elodie suggested.

Thank you all, really helpful tips!

That sounds like progress already! Sometimes it’s a combination of different factors – the only way is to test and adjust step by step. Keep it up! 🙂

Very good idea. Wood naturally expands and contracts—that’s normal. If the hard work so far hasn’t led to a final solution, humidity can definitely be the last factor to address.

Good luck moving forward, and glad we could help!

Glad to hear it has improved! 🙂 Pro tip: If you try wax, use only a very thin layer, not too much.

Sometimes a squeaking sound can come back in the first few days after the repair as the lubricant spreads. Patience pays off!
