For our new build, we focused on tiles today. We decided on the same floor tiles throughout the entire house: "Space gunmetal R10 A/B No. S118" in 60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 inches). This is a dark gray with brownish accents. For the bathroom wall, the supplier recommends "Cardi perle ret. N10" in 42.5 x 119.2 cm (17 x 47 inches). We will pair this with white interior doors. Overall, I feel this lacks color, especially since no one seems to use borders or similar details anymore. The salesperson said we would have to add color through towels or decorations. Would it be possible to paint the un-tiled wall areas in color, or would that look odd? I am thinking of a soft light green. Or what would you suggest?

I don’t understand your uncertainty regarding the color (also in the other thread). Just choose the tiles and doors according to YOUR taste, or is the tiler moving in with you?

A bathroom typically has the longest lifespan before renovation among the rooms in a house, even longer than the kitchen. This means it’s good if the bathroom’s fixed elements remain fairly neutral since you’ll be looking at them for a long time. In this respect, the dealer’s advice makes sense. Of course, it’s easy to change the overall color impression later through accessories. Still, the line between something you can live with for a long time and something boring is very narrow. Visit the most expensive bathroom showroom you can find and observe the designs from a fundamental point of view. Here, confident styling choices make all the difference.

However, when building in your own home, you should create what you actually want, not just what someone else’s judgment suggests. So if you like a border trim, go ahead and install it. If you like pale green, then paint it on. It’s easy to repaint if it doesn’t work out. If you are unsure, I would recommend getting a roll of wallpaper and painting one full strip in the desired color to hang in the bathroom for 2–3 days as a sample. Especially with bright colors, it’s easy to misjudge the intensity.

A design that falls outside the “everyone likes it” range may be polarizing. But it also carries the chance that it will be exactly yours.

“No one does borders”… just look at my profile picture. Okay, it’s not technically a border but rather a patterned tile – but so what.

I could yawn every time I see another hotel-style bathroom design – you know, the gray/white or brown/beige that’s currently “in.” It looks coherent on its own and I like it in photos, but for myself – never.

Do whatever YOU like. I’m quite sure that our blue-and-white bathroom appeals to very few people. So what? It’s ours, and I’m happy with it every time.

My bathroom is a bit unusual when it comes to colors. I like it, and most of my visitors do as well. Others find it terrible. That's fine with me because I really like it. In the morning, my bathroom greets me in a friendly and cheerful way.
By the way, the tiles are actually square. This is just an example that color can work well in a bathroom. My bathroom is small, about 5m² (54 sq ft). It also shows that you can really enjoy a space when you choose what you like.

Phew, if I listened to every “should” and “shouldn’t,” my home would look completely different. Be bold and make your own decisions, no matter what the tilers tell you! Sites like Pinterest are great for gathering ideas—I browse there all the time. You can also search for decorative tiles; in our bathroom, these are often used on one wall.

A small tip (oh no, I’m starting with those “shoulds” too): I find it more harmonious (and this is quite common nowadays) to use the same tiles on both walls and floors. And, of course, you can always refresh the look by updating the wall paint!
