Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble several IKEA Billy bookcases at home and would like to be able to handle minor repairs myself in the future. I am looking for recommendations on tools that have proven to be really effective for assembling and repairing these types of shelves. Important for me are questions like: What types of screws are typically used, do you need a cordless drill or is manual hand tool work sufficient? What about special tools for inserting the dowels? And are any particular lever tools necessary for adjusting the shelves or connector fittings? I would appreciate any practical advice, especially from people who have already assembled or repaired several Billy bookcases – maybe also with insights on the efficiency and ease of use of the recommended tools.

Thank you for the valuable tips so far! The emphasis on the torque function in cordless screwdrivers is especially important for me. IKEA often uses MDF or particleboard, which makes me concerned about driving screws in too quickly. Therefore, I will probably choose a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque settings and appropriate bits to avoid damaging the screws or splitting the material.

Regarding BLAKEO’s question: I don’t have a cordless drill/driver without torque control myself, but I would consider the risk of damage to be higher without it. Maybe someone with more experience can provide better insight.

The idea of using a rubber mallet sounds good, especially if you want to avoid damaging the wooden dowels. One last question about that: how do you prevent the dowels from being inserted too deep or at an angle? Is it just a matter of feeling and not using too much force, or are there better tools for this?
