Frederickl15 Feb 2019 14:23Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble several IKEA Billy bookcases at home and would like to be able to handle minor repairs myself in the future. I am looking for recommendations on tools that have proven to be really effective for assembling and repairing these types of shelves. Important for me are questions like: What types of screws are typically used, do you need a cordless drill or is manual hand tool work sufficient? What about special tools for inserting the dowels? And are any particular lever tools necessary for adjusting the shelves or connector fittings? I would appreciate any practical advice, especially from people who have already assembled or repaired several Billy bookcases – maybe also with insights on the efficiency and ease of use of the recommended tools.
For BILLY shelves, you definitely need a Phillips screwdriver or a suitable bit for a cordless drill. The screws are usually Phillips head. Using a cordless drill speeds up the process, but it can also be done with hand tools. For inserting the wall plugs, you don’t need anything special—a hammer is sufficient. To adjust the shelves, protective pads or a small screwdriver used as a lever can sometimes be helpful.
So, I’ve always assembled my BILLY shelves using a cordless drill – it’s fun and quick! 😄 Just gently tap the wall plugs with a hammer, not too hard, otherwise you’ll get dents. For the small connecting fittings, a small screwdriver can help – like a secret agent for invisible corners. Oh, and a spirit level never hurts, to make sure the shelves are really straight. Good luck with your building project! 🙂
That’s great when you can assemble and repair the shelves yourself! 🙂 I think a good cordless drill with adjustable torque is worth its weight in gold. Especially when you don’t want to tighten the screws too much to avoid damaging the material. For the wall plugs, I use a rubber mallet – it protects the wood and is very effective! If something gets stuck, a narrow screwdriver works well as a lever. Have fun, you’ll do great!
To add to the previous tips: a cordless drill with adjustable torque is highly recommended to avoid over-tightening the screws. When inserting wooden dowels, usually just a light tap with a rubber mallet is enough to prevent damage. Additionally, a small set of precision screwdrivers can be helpful for reaching connection fittings, which are often more delicate. Finally, I suggest having a spirit level or at least a ruler on hand to ensure the shelves are perfectly aligned – this will prevent issues later with sagging shelves.

A cordless screwdriver makes the whole process faster, but it can also be done with hand tools.I wonder how using a cordless screwdriver affects the material. IKEA furniture is known not to be made from solid wood. Could this lead to overdriving the screws and damaging parts? Maybe it would be helpful to explain the importance of torque settings in more detail here.

A good cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque is invaluable. That highlights my concerns. I would like to know if any of you have experience using a standard cordless drill-driver without torque control and whether this caused any issues with BILLY shelves.
