I am currently renovating our house from 1970 and need to replace the water pipes. My “gas-water guy” recommends plastic pipes. Other self-proclaimed “experts” say that when choosing pipes, you should consider the water hardness. They also claim that stainless steel or copper pipes are much better than plastic pipes. I am mainly interested in durability and water quality. Which material is the best from these perspectives?

My friend is also a "gas and water guy" 😀. He used plastic pipes for our house, and we have very "hard" water. He is familiar with the materials and sees no significant disadvantages compared to copper or stainless steel. However, metal pipes are much more expensive.

Hello Jägermeister,

Using plastic pipes works well; if you want the absolute best material (rust-resistant, no corrosion, very durable, expensive), stainless steel pipes are the choice.

A middle ground and another good, more affordable solution are multilayer composite pipes. These pipes are made of plastic and aluminum using multilayer technology; that means the inner pipe and the outer protective layer are made of plastic, while the aluminum layer in between provides stiffness and ensures oxygen tightness.

I can only recommend plastic pipes, which have a long service life. The advantage is that there are various fittings available, making the installation quick, which in turn saves money.

I installed these HT pipes in the house. The advantage is that they are heat-resistant and also resistant to acids. They are more affordable than lead pipes and easier to handle.

I have also installed PVC pipes in the house as well as for the wastewater system on the property. There are many components such as elbows, end caps, reducers, and other fittings. All of these can be connected quickly and easily.
