I recently assembled an IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and found that the process was more challenging than I initially expected. I am particularly interested in learning: What are the most common mistakes made when assembling IKEA Hemnes furniture? I’m especially looking for errors that can be avoided if you are aware of the typical pitfalls—such as incorrectly inserting screws, mixing up wooden parts, or issues with stability. Any advice on areas where the instructions are unclear or tips on how to best handle these challenges would also be appreciated.

I can understand very well that the assembly can be confusing at the beginning. I felt the same way.

Regarding screws: I recommend using a cordless drill with adjustable torque. This helps prevent the screws from being driven too deep or too tight. If you don’t have one, it’s better to screw by hand and check regularly.

As for the back panel: it actually provides stability. A loose back panel is not very effective; it’s best to apply some tension without deforming the boards. If you’re unsure, it’s better to adjust again.

Stay calm, you can do it!

Another point I often see is the confusion between screw types. With Hemnes, there are often different lengths and types included that look very similar. This leads to some people using the wrong ones, which can cause issues with stability or fit.

Does anyone have a tip on how to best avoid this? Is there any special tool or technique to prevent the screwdriver from slipping or applying too much force?

In terms of tools, a bit with a magnetic core helps to hold the screw better. As for force, skill is more important than brute strength. Start slowly and turn with care.

Exactly, I recommend making an inventory of all parts before assembly to sort all screws and wooden components. This avoids many mistakes later on.
