Hello community,

First of all, I have little to no knowledge about this topic, which is why a company will handle the work.

My grandparents have an outdoor patio, half of which is covered by a balcony. Over the decades, the tiles on the balcony and the uncovered part of the patio have come loose due to weathering. These are the same white 25x25cm (10x10 inches) tiles, which look like floor tiles but have a rough, non-slip surface. Both the balcony and patio are going to be completely renovated.

My question is whether it still makes sense to use such tiles and grout them as usual in this case, or if a different approach would be better. They do not want wood or wood-look materials. Since I am not familiar with this at all, I hope someone here has experience with this and can suggest some suitable options, also to help prevent potential water damage to the masonry in the long term.

Thank you in advance.

If wood or plastic are not an option, that leaves only a stone surface. So slabs, in whichever version. From the "few" options, there is exactly one left: tiles/slabs.

However, since we have no idea how the terrace and balcony are constructed, the only option is to consult a professional.

In the USA, according to relevant TV shows, people also like to use (high-quality) artificial turf. It looks like real grass (not like old-fashioned carpet) and can apparently be cleaned simply with a pressure washer. However, I have no experience with it.
For stone, I would rather use real stone set in a gravel bed than porcelain tiles.
Not sure if that works on a balcony as well.

PS, I’m wondering what exactly defines an outdoor terrace? Are there indoor terraces as well?

I like natural stone flagstones for outdoor use, preferably in a light gray such as Maggia or a slightly darker shade like Onsernone.
