Hello everyone,

I am currently considering getting a Billy bookshelf that I can use both in my office and in the living room. I’m looking for models that are visually and functionally versatile enough to fit well in both spaces. It is important to me that the bookshelf does not look too much like typical office furniture but is still sturdy enough to hold binders and work materials. Are there specific Billy models or variations you would recommend that particularly suit this combination of office and living room compatibility?

I would appreciate any advice regarding dimensions, colors, accessories, or the materials used!

Based on the dimensions and requirements you mentioned, I would definitely recommend doors. They create a clear separation between work materials and the living room appearance.

If white feels too sterile, the oak-colored models are worth considering.

I fully support the accessories: additional shelves provide flexibility.

Great that you like the doors! I have a Billy with glass doors in my living room, and it looks really stylish – not like office furniture. The glass lets the books show through well but still gives a tidy appearance. 🙂

Just make sure to install the doors properly; IKEA’s instructions are good but can be tricky in some parts.

Regarding accessories: lighting – like LED strips – makes the shelf feel cozier and highlights decorations nicely. It makes sense for the living room, less so for an office, but maybe you could switch the lights on in the evening to create a cozy atmosphere.

If you want to “transform” the shelf, you can experiment with inserts or baskets in the compartments. They help organize things and look stylish.

I recommend the classic Billy in white, 80x28 cm (31½x11 inches) with glass doors.

This provides enough depth for lever arch files, and the glass doors add a more elegant touch to your living room.

Additional doors or shelves can be installed as needed.

I completely agree. White looks simple and neutral, so you can integrate the Billy into your office or easily adapt it to your living space.

A small tip: If you don’t need your folders every day, you can choose the deeper version for the living room and the narrower one, for example next to the desk, for the most important folders. This way, you get more storage space without it feeling cluttered.

Very good tip! Additionally, I would like to mention that especially the integration of doors and the choice of the right surface are crucial to make the shelving unit feel more homely. White is of course versatile, but if you prefer something more natural, you can also opt for a version with a white front and wood decor – this looks less rigid and cold, yet still modern.

You can also use accessories such as closed boxes, storage baskets, or small drawer inserts to keep the workspace tidy and cozy. Thoughtful organization is essential, especially when shelves are used for multiple purposes.

Finally, consider the option to paint the Billy shelves or add custom handles if you want a bit more individuality. It takes some effort, but it turns a simple Billy into a real designer piece.
