Hello everyone,
I am planning to buy a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am currently looking into which Billy models are the most durable. I have noticed that there are different versions – from thinner standard shelves to slightly thicker ones. I am particularly interested in how the various models hold up over time with everyday use, especially when the shelf is heavily loaded, for example with many books or even heavier items.
Are there people in this forum who have experience with different Billy versions and can share which models are the most stable in terms of quality? I am interested both in actual usage reports and assessments regarding the materials, workmanship, and possible weak points.
Thanks in advance for your help!

As a supplement:
I recommend paying attention to the following when choosing a Billy shelf unit:
- The shelves: Thicker boards support loads better and are less likely to bend.
- Wall mounting: An essential step that significantly increases stability.
- Additional reinforcements such as metal brackets or anchors can help support heavy loads.
- When purchasing, check the quality of the finish – some models may have variations in quality.
If you plan to use a shelf for more than 30 kg (66 lbs) per board, opting for the Oxberg or XL model might be a good idea, possibly with extra reinforcements.
Does this help you?

Thanks to everyone for the really helpful answers!
The summary of material thicknesses, the differences between Standard, XL, and Oxberg, as well as the tips on wall mounting and reinforcement, are very useful.
One practical question remains for me: Is there anyone here who, after several years of use, is still very satisfied with the durability of their Billy shelf (regardless of the model)? It would be especially interesting to know whether the differences between the models prove worthwhile in everyday use over the long term, or if users report that, for example, the Standard Billy is sufficient as long as the load is handled carefully.
A small tip for those who think like me: I also want to use the shelf for collectible books and some decorative items—not just pure book storage.
Looking forward to your insights!

Hello again,
I have been using my XL Billy intensively for about 3 years and have not noticed any issues with warping or instability – despite weights of over 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf. The wall mounting is done, and I make sure not to overload it, but also not to be too cautious.
With moderate use, certainly. However, I know people who use the standard model and experience slight sagging after 5 years, especially under heavy use.
My advice: Better to have some extra margin with the materials to avoid unpleasant surprises later on.
