Hello everyone,

I have a question about my IKEA Malm dresser drawers, which seem to come off their tracks. Specifically, the drawers often won’t close properly because they slip out of the side-mounted runners. This occasionally happens during normal use, especially when the drawer is fully extended or if there is something heavy inside.

I am familiar with the standard version that has metal slides and plastic wheels. I understand that wear and tear or incorrect assembly might be the cause. My question is: What steps can be taken when Malm dresser drawers come off their tracks? Are there any proven repair methods, replacement parts, or tips that reliably fix this issue for good?

I would rather repair the dresser than replace it entirely. Any advice is appreciated, including prevention tips or recommendations for specific tools.

Best regards,

Hello Birgitt,

First, check if the sliding tracks are properly locked in place. Often, loosening the track and realigning it is enough. If plastic parts break, the only solution is to replace the sliding rails.

Sometimes dirt or small objects can also cause the guide to jam.

Good luck!

Hey Birgitt,

great that you want to repair the dresser yourself, it saves a lot of money! 🙂

I had the same issue: the drawer kept coming off the track until I found out that a small plastic sleeve holding the roller was cracked. I ordered the part separately from IKEA (ask for the drawer runner "MALM drawer slide"), then removed the old one and installed the new one. Since then, everything works perfectly!

That’s exactly my advice – order replacement parts and check the runners; often only a small part is to blame.

Good luck, and let me know if you need help with the installation 😉!

Hey Birgitt,

I'll jump into the discussion with a little trick! 😄

If the drawers are still intact but tend to pull out fully and then come off, it can help to attach a small felt or rubber strip along the drawer slide area. This way, the drawer fits more snugly and is less likely to wobble or come off easily.

Absolutely! Cleaning helps a lot, dusty runners are real troublemakers.

Good luck with your DIY – and don’t worry, drawer issues don’t have to be accepted, often it’s just a small thing.

Cheers! 🙂
