Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA BILLY bookcase where some screws have ripped out at the fixing points in the wood. Specifically, the screws no longer hold because the threads in the wood have basically worn out. The load on the shelf isn’t excessive, but I suspect the screws may have lost their grip due to being made of the wrong material or from frequent repositioning. My question to the community: How do you usually handle stripped screws in BILLY bookcases? Are there any tools or techniques to renew or reinforce the wood threads without having to rebuild the entire unit? I look forward to practical tips and shared experiences!

Hi, if the screws have stripped out, it often helps to put some wood glue into the hole and then fill it with wood chips or small wood pieces. After that, let it dry and then screw in new screws. Alternatively, you can use dowels to stabilize the hole.

Hello HARLEY, thank you for your detailed description of your issue. If the thread in the shelf board has stripped, it is usually because the material is too soft or the screws are too thick or have been screwed in and out too many times. A common solution is to repair the damage using a wooden dowel or a wood repair kit. Step 1: First, remove all loose wood debris from the screw hole using a small drill bit or an awl. Step 2: Select a wooden dowel that matches the diameter of the old hole and glue it into the hole with wood glue. Note: Precision is important here, as a crookedly glued dowel will not be effective later. Step 3: Wait at least 24 hours for the glue to fully dry. Step 4: Drill a new pilot hole into the dowel sized appropriately for your screw, then carefully screw the screw back in. Important: Do not overtighten the screw to avoid stripping the hole again. What screw size and length are you using exactly? Do you know the material—MDF or particle board? This can also affect the procedure.

As an addition: It is advisable to switch to dimensionally stable screws made of hardened steel with fine threads. They provide better grip in typical BILLY materials (particleboard). When restoring the thread, using wooden dowels also helps, as they distribute tensile and shear forces more effectively. If you frequently assemble and disassemble furniture, it may be worthwhile to insert plastic furniture fittings into the pre-drilled holes to protect the wood in the long term.

A classic approach is to fill the gap with a wooden dowel or a so-called wood repair kit.

I completely agree with that. I had the same issue with my BILLY shelves. The key is to be patient and really give the glue enough time to cure. Additionally, I would recommend screwing in slowly and carefully – this protects the newly filled hole. If you’re repairing with wood glue, some sandpaper after drying can also help to remove any excess. How much weight does the shelf need to support, and is it just the side panels or the back panel affected as well? That can influence the repair method a bit.
