ᐅ Construction Site Waste – What Is Acceptable?

Hello!

I had the landscaping contractor on site, and he told me to make sure that the general contractor leaves the construction site clean. He even said that if cigarette butts are left on the property afterwards, he would charge for waste disposal by subcontractors. Is that normal?

The general contractor, of course, says that he is not responsible for picking up his workers’ cigarette butts and considers small Poroton crumbs as acceptable residue left on the site. Now I’m not sure where exactly the line is—what does the general contractor have to do and what not? It’s actually quite simple: if I know what he is required to do, I can formally ask him to fully clean the property upon completing his work and report back to me. Then I can photograph any remaining debris, set a deadline for cleanup, and refer to deductions from the final payment if necessary.

Another point of discussion will definitely be all the “small” plaster residues in the bushes, etc.

How was it on your construction sites? The contract says nothing about this... sometimes you read about the interior being handed over “broom clean” — but I cannot find any similar term for final site condition outdoors and don’t know what is generally expected there.

I assume, as someone who opposes the station, you are referring to the part of my post about the unnecessary comment regarding the refugees, not my opinion on the thread itself. Therefore, I will not respond to that, as it would otherwise hijack the thread, which should not be the purpose.

If I’m wrong -> I agree with ypg. Anyone who gets upset over discarded cigarette butts during the construction phase will likely have a heart attack within the next five years. Better to focus on the important things in life or bigger problems on the construction site.

When it comes to prioritizing issues before addressing them, for example, sexual assaults committed by fathers, uncles, brothers, neighbors, school friends, or husbands come before assaults committed by refugees. The likelihood of a woman being assaulted by someone from these groups is significantly higher than the risk of being assaulted by a refugee.

Discarded cigarette butts, of course, rank much, much lower on that list.

Come on now. Next thing you know, someone will claim that the most important problems are those that cause the most unnecessary deaths, like hospital-acquired infections or poor or missing elderly care. Or drunk driving accidents.

Everything else is irrelevant anyway, all those rapes by refugees, etc., etc.

Your comment is really unnecessary

Here it is, sorted out. And in the end, someone seriously asks: Why? Whenever a problem is discussed nowadays, someone forces a connection to refugees where none exists. It can be inserted anywhere, cheaply gaining a few “likes” and then moving on once the thread is ruined. Since we almost only discuss first world problems here in the building forum, one can always say: “You have problems—ever been raped by a refugee?”

Of course, you could also just leave it out and start a separate off-topic thread if you want to talk about it.

A typical response when people don’t want to face the challenges in their own country: There is almost always something going worse somewhere else – using that as an excuse to do nothing or to just let things be leads to what is considered "normal" in certain countries. Is that what we want? I don’t.

I fully agree! We should tackle this persistent tipping problem on construction sites!

Everything else doesn’t really matter anyway: 3,000 traffic fatalities, more than 3,000 deaths due to hospital-acquired infections, and so on.

Hopefully by now he has swept away the cigarette butts and built up some ash.
