Hello,

On the corner plot where we plan to build, there used to be a corner house (built in 1894 / fire and explosion damage during World War II / leveled in 1955). This house had a basement. Currently, we assume that the basement was only filled in, not demolished.

For the new construction, we are bound by the original building lines. This means we will build very precisely on the footprint of the old house. The building dimensions will also be similar. We would like to include a basement as well. Is it feasible to excavate and renovate the old basement? Of course, only if there are economic and/or ecological reasons to do so. Since the basement was about 1.50m (5 feet) below ground and was demolished at ground level, the walls would definitely need to be rebuilt.

If this is not advisable (which I assume): What can be expected regarding the depth of the foundation below the basement? In other words, how deep will the excavation pit need to be to remove the old basement?

The issue is resolved. Contrary to expectations, the old basement was completely excavated at that time. Unfortunately, the excavation pit was filled with construction debris.
