ᐅ Treating KALLAX with Furniture Oil – Is It Worth It?

Hello everyone,

I am considering treating my IKEA KALLAX shelf with furniture oil to make the surface more durable and possibly a bit more resistant to wear and tear. So my question is: does this actually make a difference?

I imagine that furniture oil wouldn’t have much effect on particleboard or similar materials, but since KALLAX is a coated wood-based panel with a foil surface, I’m unsure if it makes sense at all or if the oil simply doesn’t absorb properly and just leaves a greasy residue.

Does anyone have experience with KALLAX and furniture oil? If so, how did it turn out? I’m especially interested in whether the furniture oil improves, protects, or even enhances the appearance of the surface. It would also be helpful to know if it makes cleaning easier or more difficult.

Looking forward to your opinions and tips!

Furniture oil is intended for open-pored wood

I hadn’t really considered that before, thanks for the tip!

I was also thinking about whether it might make sense to oil individual elements made of solid wood (such as a wooden insert or shelf) and leave the rest as it is. Does anyone know good ways to enhance wooden inserts in KALLAX shelves without damaging the structure?

Maybe combining with real wood will also reduce the artificial feel of the surface.

Hello Jonre,

I think your idea makes a lot of sense! You can definitely treat real wood inserts with furniture oil, which gives them a nice natural feel and protects the wood. However, it is important to keep the following in mind:

1. Clean preparation: The wood must be sanded and free of dust.

2. Apply thin layers: It’s better to apply several thin layers and allow each to soak in well.

3. Do not apply oil to foil surfaces – it’s better to mask them off.

If you want to make the wood inserts yourself, I recommend oiled oak wood, which looks elegant and is relatively durable. Good oils include linseed oil, tung oil, or specific furniture oils that dry quickly.

This way, you can customize your KALLAX look very individually without changing the basic structure.

If you have any questions about this, I’m happy to help!

Oiling the wood and either laminating or painting the KALLAX is the only effective method. Any other approach will only be a partial solution.

Hey everyone,

Really interesting discussion here! 😊 I think the idea of selectively oiling individual wooden components is very creative, as it combines practical protection with a beautiful, warm appearance.

To be honest, I haven’t treated my KALLAX because I actually like it the way it is. But occasionally wiping it down with a damp cloth and gently polishing works great to keep the surface clean and fresh.

And if you’re looking for something different: maybe try experimenting with a wood contact spray, which offers light protection without leaving a greasy or sticky residue – though this is more for the pros among us. 😉

Looking forward to more tips!

Furniture oil on KALLAX? Better not. It is laminate, not wood. Oils do not absorb and can remain sticky. The best care is cleaning and protection with a suitable maintenance wax or polish for laminate surfaces.
