Hello, I am currently in the process of replacing a toilet. Unfortunately, I discovered a chip or damage underneath the ceramic. It looks like a piece has come off. Can it still be installed this way, or could it cause problems later on?

If you don’t mind the soup potentially leaking out there? I would hesitate to install it like that, even if the hole doesn’t go all the way through.

Did you only notice this at home? Exchange it.

If it’s just the enamel, nothing will leak through.

Not really. It seems to be just the enamel coating. This is applied wet onto the ceramic. During drying, a bubble likely formed underneath, which then burst either during storage or transport.

Problems could arise if you regularly catch on it while cleaning—if it’s even cleaned there at all. However, you have a warranty. This is simply a material defect. Without that defect, there wouldn’t be any “hole” there.

If it’s really just the glaze and the hole doesn’t go through the ceramic itself, it shouldn’t technically be a problem at first—nothing will leak. However, it is still a defect, and especially with a new toilet, I would seriously consider whether you want to install it like that.

On the one hand, warranty clearly applies here, and you have a right to a flawless product. On the other hand, if moisture gets in later (for example, when cleaning or from condensation), it could gradually soak in or cause mineral deposits over the years—it doesn't have to, but it can. And aesthetically, it’s not very appealing.

If you don’t mind and need the item quickly, it will probably be okay. But if you still have some flexibility, it’s better to have it exchanged.
