ᐅ The Kallax squeaks since a carpet was placed underneath it – has anyone else experienced this?

lichen6Hello everyone,
I recently placed my Kallax shelf from Ikea on a new carpet, and I noticed that the shelf now squeaks whenever I move it or tap it lightly. This didn’t happen before when it was on a hard, smooth floor. I suspect the friction between the shelf and the carpet, or possibly the different underlying surface, is causing some movement that leads to the noise.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m particularly interested in whether this is a common issue or if it might indicate a kind of construction tolerance or material stress. Maybe there are also tips on how to permanently prevent the squeaking without having to completely rebuild the shelf.
It would be great if you could share your experiences so I can better understand the situation and possibly fix it. Thanks in advance!

The shelf now squeaks whenever I move it or tap it lightly. This is actually a common issue, especially with furniture made of wood or particle board placed on uneven or softer surfaces. The cause usually lies in the slightly altered dynamics of the forces acting between the shelf and the floor.
If your Kallax originally stood on a hard, smooth floor, the forces from small movements were transferred directly without the furniture shifting noticeably. On a carpeted floor, however, there is more friction and elastic give between the shelf and the surface. As a result, the panels can shift slightly or rub against each other, which causes the squeaking.
Here are some technical details and suggestions:
1. The joint points between panels and the back panel or shelves can be particularly sensitive to such movements.
2. Uneven load, for example from objects pressing on the shelf, can increase tension.
3. Carpet fibers can compress slightly under load, causing micro-movements in the shelf during loading and unloading.
To better assess the situation, it would be helpful to know:
- How old is your shelf? Has it been modified or altered in any way?
- Does the squeaking always occur at a specific spot when touched or loaded?
If you want to fix the problem, you could try placing felt pads between the shelf and the carpet to reduce friction and dampen small movements. Sometimes gently tightening screws and connections, which may have loosened or shifted with the new setup, also helps.
Looking forward to your answers so we can find the right solution for you!

Place felt pads between the shelf and the carpet to reduce friction and dampen minor movements. That’s a very good tip. I would like to add that frequent squeaking is often caused by minimal pressure on the connection points, which is amplified by a flexible surface like a carpet.
Additionally, I recommend checking the adjustable feet of the Kallax. Some models have small plastic or rubber buffers that can deform or shift over time. If these buffers are no longer fully intact, the balance can be affected—especially on a soft or flexible surface.
A further minor intervention would be to carefully apply a small amount of lubricant to critical contact points—for example, paraffin or silicone spray—to reduce mechanical friction. Take care to avoid stains on the carpet or wood.
If none of this helps, it may be worthwhile to reinforce the shelf with additional screws or brackets, especially if it has been in use for a while.
A closer analysis:
In such cases, the squeaking usually results not only from friction between the furniture and the floor but also from internal stresses and slight shifts in the connections within the shelving unit itself, caused by the changed support from the floor.
The carpet acts as an elastic layer that distributes point loads unevenly, allowing the cabinet to deform slightly. Especially the glued joints of the panels can convert these movements into noises.
Recommendations:
1. Check the connections of the Kallax shelving unit for stability and rule out any mechanical weak points.
2. Use special anti-slip mats (made of rubber or foam) that reduce the effect of the carpet’s elasticity without damaging the surface.
3. Inspect the load distribution on the shelving unit – uneven loading can increase movement.
In general, this noise indicates that the furniture is operating under altered mechanical conditions, which is usually not dangerous. However, damping and securing the unit can often significantly improve the problem.

- Place felt pads or rubber bumpers under the legs or under the shelf
- Tighten screws
- Use an anti-slip mat if necessary
This noticeably reduces squeaking movements.
