Hello everyone,

We are currently planning our house. My idea is to place the utility room with the gas boiler, ventilation system, washing machine, dryer, electrical panel, etc., on the upper floor.

Our house will be built without a basement, and since we want a double garage, it will be integrated into the house. This way, we would have more space on the ground floor, and I wouldn’t have to design the utility room too small.

Thank you very much!

Best regards,

Thank you for the feedback. I will discuss this with the architect as we are just starting our planning.
I would like to make the utility room a bit larger, so it would be better suited on the upper floor.

Best regards

Since a storage room on the ground floor makes sense anyway, I would plan the technical room on the ground floor and the utility room as such on the upper floor.

We have planned a storage room behind the garage; additionally, we are planning a storage room behind the kitchen with a sliding door.

We are building with a ground floor, first floor, and attic. Our utility room is also on the ground floor, approximately 5sqm (54 sq ft), while the rest of the technical equipment, such as the gas boiler and heating water tank, are in the attic, about 15sqm (161 sq ft).

If I were to plan/build again, I would personally at least put the washing machine and dryer on the upper floor. But it is essential to pay attention to soundproofing and (ventilation/air circulation).

In our case, dirty laundry accumulates upstairs, is carried down to be washed, then in its damp (heavy) state carried back up, dried, ironed, and put away in the wardrobe.

We definitely would have had enough space for that...

It depends on whether you have a dryer or not!
If you plan to hang the laundry outside, having the utility room upstairs doesn’t make much sense since you’ll need to go downstairs anyway.
With a dryer, I actually think having the utility room upstairs is quite a good idea.

We have the utility room downstairs because we don’t own (and don’t need) a dryer. It would be impractical for us to wash clothes upstairs, carry wet laundry downstairs to hang outside, and then bring it back upstairs to the closet—that would just be an extra trip.

So it’s best to arrange it in a way that fits your personal situation.

Can someone please explain to a woman who has always lived with a dryer in the house (also as a child in my parents’ home) how to dry laundry outdoors when it rains for days or the temperature is below freezing?
