I want to fill the gap – see photo – with screed.

The staircase is made of steel. Do I need to insulate the steel to prevent rust or anything like that? Or can I apply the screed directly?

Thank you very much

Offene Bodenöffnung mit schwarzer Metallplatte, Schraubenmontage, Kabeln und Plastikfolie.

Our screed expert here is @KlaRa.
Maybe they know how to properly fill something like this.

Interesting staircase construction ;-)

I have already closed it off.
I wrapped the steel staircase at the bottom completely with plastic sheeting and placed plastic (the same type used for foundation slabs) underneath on the floor and along the edge in the gap. In theory, no water can come through there, but I put it in as a precaution. It should work.

- Thanks, I’m not sure if that was meant ironically 🙂 – but the wood will still be installed on top.
