Hello everyone,

since I noticed the topic about stair dimensions in another thread and have been uncertain for a few weeks whether the stair measurements are acceptable, I’m bringing it here for discussion.

My only experience is with the stairs at my parents’ house, which are 2.30m x 1.65m (7 ft 7 in x 5 ft 5 in) and, in my opinion, comfortable to use.

Attached is the image with the measurements provided by the architect. The stairwell dimensions are exactly 2m x 2m (6 ft 7 in x 6 ft 7 in).

What do you think?

The dimensions are pretty much exactly like that.

For everyday use, it works fine if you take the stairs one step at a time. I'm currently trying hard to remember if I've consciously met my wife on the stairs at all in the last three years.

If you want to move larger pieces of furniture to the upper floor, you definitely need to maneuver carefully and it’s better to have one or two extra people. Either carry items upright or lift them over the railing.

That reassures me a bit, as I have seen a collection of "typical" stair dimensions here in the forum, and mine wasn’t even close to any of them.

What about the values for the stair, like "15 risers 19.0cm (7.5 inches)/26.3cm (10.4 inches)"?

Now you’re asking me something. It definitely has 15 steps. Our build was over 3 years ago, so I no longer remember the exact rise and run of the steps. I just looked through the quote for the staircase in my emails, but it’s not specified there either.

As a small addition:
We have a railing-supporting staircase without a wall stringer. This makes the staircase appear even more open compared to staircases with a stringer.

According to common teaching, that's slightly steeper than comfortable (riser-tread ratio 64.3, recommended 63).

This calculation is not the rise measure but rather the stair tread formula (2x riser height + 1x tread depth). For a long time, 63cm (25 inches) was the standard basis. Nowadays, it sometimes goes up to 65cm (26 inches) as people tend to be taller.

The slope angle is about 36°. This should still be acceptable. You can’t really change much unless there is more space available for the staircase. Personally, I don’t like these narrow, quarter-turn staircases.
