Hello everyone,

since I noticed the topic about stair dimensions in another thread and have been uncertain for a few weeks whether the stair measurements are acceptable, I’m bringing it here for discussion.

My only experience is with the stairs at my parents’ house, which are 2.30m x 1.65m (7 ft 7 in x 5 ft 5 in) and, in my opinion, comfortable to use.

Attached is the image with the measurements provided by the architect. The stairwell dimensions are exactly 2m x 2m (6 ft 7 in x 6 ft 7 in).

What do you think?

No cats or dogs present. The children are familiar with this type of staircase from their grandmother’s house (steel/wood, open, about 2.30m x 1.70m (7 ft 7 in x 5 ft 7 in)). The treads are, of course, extremely smooth.

The budget for the staircase is 5,000 euros. Will that be enough for the latest proposal from @Musketier? So, from the basement to the upper floor.

If not, it will have to be the standard steel/wood construction anyway!

Here is our steel stringer staircase with risers.

2.13 meters (7 feet) wide * 2.36 meters (7 feet 9 inches) deep

Unfortunately, I don’t have any more detailed pictures on my phone.

I can provide more this evening.
Interior with wooden steps, left wooden handrail on white wall, right unfinished concrete wall

Wooden handrail on a stair edge inside; two construction lumber pieces resting on it

Narrow wooden stair leading upward, left wooden handrail, white walls and grey tiled floor below.

Narrow wooden spiral staircase in bright stairwell, steps spiral-shaped, railing on the left.

New wooden staircase with grey treads, numbered steps inside.

We also took some time and finally decided on the following staircase:
16 steps, 18.56cm (7.3 inches) rise / 25.94cm (10.2 inches) tread
Rough stair width: 100cm (39 inches)
Floor plan: 240cm x 200cm (94 inches x 79 inches)

Even with 0.4m (16 inches) more space compared to your design, the staircase was considered only moderately comfortable and safe here in the forum. I have walked and measured various staircases in show homes and came to the conclusion that almost all staircases with two 1/4 turns were less generous but still not uncomfortable.
I would recommend spending a Saturday at a show home village, armed with a tape measure, to try out different staircases in person. That contributes much more to forming an opinion than the forum discussions.

Best regards

So, if I imagine the balustrade width taken away, the staircase is about 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches) wide. At first glance, it doesn’t look uncomfortable.

For us, it is completely fine.

The Ikea Pax wardrobe has been placed on top of it, and our 2 1/2-year-old climbs up and down it quite safely.
