Hello everyone,

We have a question regarding the following issue (all work was carried out by professional contractors).

In front of the house, we had a wall built using basement formwork blocks (2021). In 2022, wall cap slabs were installed on top. At the time the cap slabs were installed, the wall was dry. Afterwards, the wall was plastered on the sides. The drip edge was plastered over without any prior notice to us. After just a few months, we noticed some stains and have since been in regular contact with the contractors. The two companies have now concluded that the cap slabs are too narrow and need to be replaced with wider slabs to restore the drip edge.

We now have the following questions and hope someone here can help us.
  • What causes these stains or where do they come from?
  • Is the problem resolved by using wider cap slabs or a drip edge?
We would appreciate any feedback.
Best regards

Hello everyone,

a quick update here.

After discussions with all the involved tradespeople, the current status is that the cover slabs will now be replaced with wider ones. After that, the wall will be replastered.

It turns out that the cover slabs we looked at, due to their increased width, extend into our staircase area. One manufacturer of a lean-to roof cover slab had the idea to choose a cover slab with only one drip edge (on the side where the plaster is) and to have the slope also angled towards that side.

On the other side, it could be flush. I have attached a picture showing how it currently looks with the old overhanging slabs and the facing bricks.

Will this work, or could it cause problems again? I would appreciate any advice on how to handle this smoothly. Also open to alternatives for the cover or the plaster, etc.

Thanks and best regards,
Karl

P.S. The white spots visible in the picture are limestone pieces glued onto the wall. Can anyone say what causes these spots?
