Hello! I’m new here – but I hope this is the right place. I am in the process of buying a “renovated” house. One of my many worries and questions is whether a window sill can simply be omitted for a basement window (see attachment). I believe that would be a serious defect.

Is the base sill the same as the windowsill? If so, everyone will just smile tiredly at you when you talk about a "serious defect" ;-)

Yes, the exterior windowsill is meant. Let me put it another way: should there be one or not?

A photo of the outside is needed for that. However, I would assume that since it is purely a utility basement, no external windowsill was required during the original construction of the house.

Why do you think this is a defect? Especially considering you bought it as a used property?

Attached is the photo. The house I want to buy has been renovated... and I am concerned it might have been done carelessly. Therefore, my question is: should there actually be a windowsill here? Is it acceptable to have no windowsill?
