We are expecting a visit soon from an American friend of my daughter. However, my daughter wants to keep her small room to herself, so we are considering whether either one of us or the friend could stay in the basement. According to the hygrometer, the humidity level is already near the upper limit, I believe close to 80%. I don’t see any mold. The house is 14 years old. The basement has carpet, a sofa, a foosball table, etc. But I’m not sure if sleeping there for 30 days is okay or could be harmful to health. How can we find out? When you enter the basement, there is a slight musty smell. What do you think?
According to the radon map, our area is not particularly affected.

I was once an exchange student in the USA and stayed in the basement hobby room, which became my bedroom by my own choice. However, I was there for a longer period and was able to choose myself (at 16 years old).
But this girl is visiting a friend for 4 weeks. She will want to spend time with her friend, right? She’s definitely not coming because Germany is so beautiful.
For me, there would be no question either. If my daughter doesn’t want to accommodate a guest in her room, she can’t have visitors...!

The American friend should not sleep in the basement. We, the parents, would move into the basement, and she would get our bedroom upstairs, so that all the children can stay on one level.
By the way, the basement room is carpeted and furnished with a sofa, a 100 kg (220 lbs) foosball table, a dartboard, a weight bench, etc., which would be fine for us. The basement has hopper windows (or whatever they are called), meaning the room where we would sleep has one, and there is another one on the other side (where the washing machine and dryer are). Some light comes in, but not direct sunlight. Ventilation is done by tilting the windows open, which opens quite wide. Outside the window is a mesh screen to keep animals out (we once had a frog in the basement when there was no screen). By ventilating, the humidity yesterday was reduced to about 73–75%.
How can we determine if the basement is suitable for sleeping? We don’t want to risk a lung illness or something similar after 30 days.

PS: The recreational basement is on the side where we have an issue with the outdoor water tap: https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/Wasser-läuft-aus-hausfugen.10006/ Could this be related to the humidity? There is no mold on the walls.

I have now spent a week in my parents' basement because my sister was also visiting, and we had to share the space accordingly (each of us had the child with them).
The air humidity in the guest room in the basement was already very high, and our clothes felt damp after two days.
After that, I placed a dehumidifier in the basement room and dehumidified it to about 40% during the day. After the night, it rose back to 75%.
