We are expecting a visit soon from an American friend of my daughter. However, my daughter wants to keep her small room to herself, so we are considering whether either one of us or the friend could stay in the basement. According to the hygrometer, the humidity level is already near the upper limit, I believe close to 80%. I don’t see any mold. The house is 14 years old. The basement has carpet, a sofa, a foosball table, etc. But I’m not sure if sleeping there for 30 days is okay or could be harmful to health. How can we find out? When you enter the basement, there is a slight musty smell. What do you think?
According to the radon map, our area is not particularly affected.

We have now found a different solution so that everyone sleeps upstairs on the first floor. However, I have still bought an electric dehumidifier. Nevertheless, I want to address the problem at its roots to avoid the dehumidifier running constantly. I will probably remove the carpet at some point and replace it with another type of flooring.

It seems a bit odd to send guests to the basement. In my opinion, that’s not acceptable at all. Staying there for 2-3 days would be completely fine, but living in the basement for 30 days is a bit too much.

I wouldn’t do that either, but I already mentioned this five posts above.

Our current solution seems to work well: the American girl got my daughter’s room, and my daughter is sharing the large bedroom with us, using a large wardrobe as a room divider. It works perfectly .

Regarding moisture in the basement, we will probably have to remove the carpet there at some point.
