Hello everyone,

I am currently planning our new home. Today, the architect called me to ask which type of roof covering I would prefer. He is working on the structural calculations and needs this information.

After a long phone call, I was unfortunately unable to make a decision! The options are a tiled roof or a titanium zinc standing seam roof. The problem was that he couldn’t tell me which roof covering would be more cost-effective. Maybe you can provide some arguments to help me decide.

Our situation:

We are building a bungalow with two offset mono-pitched roofs. One mono-pitch faces south and has a slope of 13 degrees. The other mono-pitch faces north with a slope of 10 degrees.
The architect said it doesn’t matter which covering I choose because both require a layer of bitumen membrane (or similar) underneath for waterproofing. Is that correct?

I am leaning towards the titanium zinc roof, but I have some questions. How much does it cost? How durable is it? What happens if repairs are needed? Is the substructure more complex compared to a tiled roof? Does the titanium zinc roof need to be fully supported underneath to be walkable, or is a battening sufficient? Is a metal roof always a cold roof?

I hope this information is enough to get started. I look forward to your suggestions and the discussion.

Best regards

Florian
