ᐅ Programming shading systems – experiences and tips?

Hello dear home building community,

we have completed our house construction and are about to move in. Now my electrician asked me how I want to program my roller blinds and shading in general. The floor plan is very open with lots of window area, and the house faces south.
How have you handled this? Are there any tables or guidelines on how to program this for summer and winter?
Thank you in advance for your input.
Regards,
Matthias

Well, that can be easily done by measuring the consumption at the TV socket.

I assumed the same, but I couldn’t manage it because my TV (Sony) sometimes had power consumption so close to the standby level during dark scenes that I couldn’t distinguish it clearly anymore.

After experimenting for a while, I solved the TV control with KNX like this:

My push button (PM) in the living room has an IR receiver (Merten 630919). My Logitech Harmony sends an IR command when switching on, which the PM recognizes as "TV On" and sends this command to the bus.
As a result, the PM locks the lighting control and the blinds go down.
When the TV is turned off, the process runs in reverse: Off command via IR to the PM. The lighting is unlocked, blinds go up, unless shading is necessary, in which case it is activated.

Cool thing, I’ve had the Harmony Ultimate for over 2 years and still don’t use it very often.

Hello Matthias,

For shading, I would always recommend an automatic system that adjusts based on sunlight intensity, possibly combined with time of day to select the building side for primary shading (south during the day, west in the evening, etc.).

You’ve built a beautiful house, and I know your architects as well. Since you managed the construction yourself, I would like to exchange experiences with you. Unfortunately, private messages are only possible after numerous posts in the forum. I would appreciate an email from you (Link).

I assumed that as well, but couldn’t manage it because my TV (Sony) with dark images sometimes consumed nearly the same power as in standby mode, so I couldn’t reliably differentiate between the two.
Is the TV’s standby power consumption really that high, or is the measurement inaccurate? We use the same solution with a dedicated outlet for the TV. I set the threshold at 10 W. Standby consumption is somewhere around 1.x watts. We’ve never had any issues with that. However, we also have a meter that measures real power (active power).

This function could be handled, for example, with a small Control4 controller. For those who prefer DIY solutions, it might be worth checking out ioBroker and similar platforms to see if there are IP drivers available for the devices. These report back clearly on their current status.

The TV is from Sony, and the standby power consumption is usually 5W, but it sometimes jumps to 25W. Additionally, during operation, it regularly drops below 10W in very dark scenes.
However, my solution with the Harmony and the infrared receiver in the media cabinet works perfectly, so it doesn’t bother me that much...
