Hello,
we are having a spiral staircase installed, and I think when they cut the hole in the ceiling, the wall below in the apartment will be affected (roughcast plaster). Since I cannot plaster such a large surface myself, my question is: can I simply screw drywall boards directly onto it, or would I need a batten framework underneath?

Otherwise, is it possible to apply roughcast plaster directly over the old roughcast plaster? Alternatively, I would have the drywall sheets smoothly plastered and then painted. Is this advisable, or should it be avoided? In that case, for the appearance alone, I would need to design the entire room accordingly.

It depends on the substrate. If the drywall (UK) / gypsum board (US) under the old wooden panel is level, you can screw on another drywall panel. I would use a 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) panel for this.

I can also imagine that you could apply a new plaster layer onto the old plaster, but it depends on how firmly the old plaster is still adhering...
